Browser Charts or Owned Files: Pick Your Preflop Workflow

There are two reasonable ways to study solved preflop ranges. You can read them as live charts in a browser, or you can own the files and open them in a solver on your own machine. Both give you the same underlying solves. They suit different habits, and the honest answer to "which is better" is that it depends on how you actually study.

This piece lays out what each is genuinely good at, so you can pick on the basis of your workflow rather than a sales pitch.

The two workflows

Live charts in a browser. You open a page, pick a spot, and the grid is there with real frequencies. Nothing to install, nothing to keep track of, and the whole library is reachable in a couple of clicks. Moving from a 100bb cash open to a 20bb tournament shove is a click, not a file dialog. This is the range viewer, and it runs on a subscription.

Files you own. You buy a bundle once, download it, and open it in the Simple Preflop solver. The files sit on your machine. What browser charts are better at

Breadth on demand. The value of having everything in one place shows up when you are comparing rather than drilling. How does the cutoff opening range change from 100bb to 60bb? How does the same seat look in a tournament with an ante versus a raked cash game? Those questions are natural in a browser and awkward when each answer is a separate file.

Zero setup. No installer, no downloads to organize, no keeping track of which file is which. For a lot of players that friction is the difference between studying and meaning to study.

Quick lookups. If your study pattern is "I had a weird spot last night, what does the solve say," a browser is simply faster than launching software and loading a file.

What owned files are better at

No connection required. This is the clearest practical difference. On a plane, in a hotel with bad wifi, or anywhere you would rather not depend on a network, files work and a browser does not.

Permanence. The files stay on your drive. If you take six months off from poker, or your priorities change, or you simply stop paying for study tools, the material you already drilled is still there. For some players that is worth a lot and for others it is irrelevant, which is exactly why this is a workflow question rather than a right answer.

A stable reference. The file you drilled last month is the file you open this month. Nothing has been re-solved or reorganized in between.

What does not distinguish them

Worth being clear about the things that are the same either way, because these are where marketing usually goes vague.

The solves. The ranges are the same work. Neither delivery method is more or less accurate than the other.

The need to actually learn them. Having access to correct ranges, by any route, is not the same as knowing them. The study still has to happen, and the method matters more than the format. How to memorize preflop ranges is about that part.

Whether they expire. A solved range does not decay. What makes a range wrong is a change in the conditions it assumed, not the passage of time, and that is true of a file on your drive and a chart in a browser equally.

What a session actually looks like in each

The abstract comparison is less useful than picturing the work, so here is the same hour of study in both.

In the browser. You sit down with a question, usually one that came out of a session: something felt wrong in a spot last night. You pull up the seat, the action, and the stack depth, and read the grid. Then you change one variable, the depth or the position, and read it again, which is where the understanding actually forms. Comparison is cheap, so you do a lot of it. The failure mode is that this drifts into browsing rather than drilling. You look at a lot of charts and retain little, because recognition feels like learning and is not.

In the solver, with files. You load a bundle and work through a tree deliberately. Because switching between files has a cost, you tend to stay in one format and one depth longer, which pushes you toward depth over breadth. That is often the better study pattern. The failure mode is the opposite one: you drill the same comfortable spots repeatedly and never open the file for the format you play badly.

Both failure modes are about method rather than format, which is the point. The workflow nudges you, it does not decide for you.

The switching cost is low, which matters

One thing worth saying plainly: this is not a decision you are locked into. The ranges are the same solves, so anything you learned in one workflow transfers wholly to the other. Nothing is wasted if you change your mind.

That makes the choice lower-stakes than it looks. The trial exists so you can find out whether the browser workflow suits you without deciding anything permanent, and the files do not expire if you later spend a stretch studying in the browser instead. Treating this as a fork in the road, rather than a preference you can revise, is the main way people overthink it.

The thing that actually matters: conditions and coverage

Whichever workflow you pick, two questions decide whether a set of ranges is worth studying at all.

Does it state what it was solved for? A preflop solve is only valid for the game it described. Rake, ante, table size, stack depth, and the bet sizes available all change the answer. The Simple GTO cash ranges are solved on the 500z rake structure, the standard for online 6-max cash, because rake taxes every pot that reaches a flop and trims the marginal hands out of the range. The tournament ranges use a 12.5% ante, which inflates the pot before anyone acts and widens correct opens across every seat. Does it cover the spots you actually play? Coverage gaps hurt most at the extremes, because that is where intuition is worst. It is easy to find 100bb 6-max opening ranges. It is the short-stack spots, the blind-versus-blind trees, and the four-bet and five-bet branches that decide sessions and that most material skips. How to choose

A few honest heuristics.

Study mostly at a desk, online, in short bursts? The browser suits you. Fast lookups and easy comparison are exactly what it is good at.

Study offline, or away from a reliable connection? Files. This is not a preference, it is a hard requirement, and it decides the question on its own.

Want to compare a lot of spots against each other? Browser. Flipping between formats and depths is where it pulls ahead.

Want the material to remain yours indefinitely? Files.

The format is the container. The study is the thing.

Should I buy preflop ranges or use a browser tool?
It depends on how you study. If you study in short sessions at a computer with a connection and want the whole library instantly searchable, browser charts fit better. If you study offline, review away from your desk, or want the material to stay yours regardless of billing, files fit better. Plenty of players use both.
Do solved preflop ranges go out of date?
The solve itself does not. A 6-max opening range solved for a given rake structure and stack depth stays correct as long as those conditions hold. What does change is the game around it: a different rake structure, a different ante, or a format you did not previously play all need their own solve.
What is the advantage of owning the files?
They work with no connection, they stay with you after you stop paying for anything, and you can drill them in Simple Preflop on your own schedule. For players who study on a laptop away from reliable internet, or who want a permanent reference, that is the deciding factor.

What should I look for in any set of solved ranges?
Two things. Coverage: does it include your formats and the stack depths you actually play, including the short ones. And stated conditions: does it tell you the rake structure, ante, and table size it was solved for. Ranges that do not name their assumptions are giving you an answer without the question.
