How to Study Preflop Ranges Efficiently
Most players study preflop ranges by staring at them. Open a chart, look at it until it feels familiar, close it, repeat with the next one. Then a real hand arrives at the table and familiarity turns out not to be recall. The fix is not more discipline in front of the same screenshot, it is a better workflow: studying the range space in the right order, in the right sized pieces, with testing and review built in from the start. Ranges are a workflow problem before they are a memory problem
There are two layers to learning ranges, and most advice only covers one of them. The lower layer is memory technique: how to compress a 13 by 13 grid into shapes, tiers, and boundaries so it fits in a human head. The upper layer is the one this article is about: what to study, in what order, in what sized pieces, and on what schedule. Think of the difference between knowing how to perform an exercise and having a training program. Perfect technique applied to random material in random order still produces a player who knows the cutoff opening range cold and freezes when the action is different. The workflow decides whether hours of study turn into decisions at the table or into a vague sense of having seen this chart before.
Cut the space into buckets: position, action, depth
The first workflow decision is refusing to treat "preflop" as one subject. Every preflop spot is defined by three coordinates: your position, the action in front of you, and the stack depth. A range is the answer to one specific combination, and modern libraries answer a lot of combinations. A good family shares one underlying logic, so the members reinforce each other. A family that mixes logics, say a button open and a blind versus blind 3-bet, is two subjects wearing one label, and studying it as one produces the blur you are trying to avoid.
One spot family per session
The session is the unit of studying, and the rule that does the most work is brutally simple: one spot family per session. Twenty to forty minutes, one bucket, nothing else.
The reason is interference. Ranges within a family differ in small, patterned ways, and those small differences are precisely the content. When you study cutoff opens and big blind defense in the same sitting, the two range shapes overwrite each other, and a week later you half-remember both, which is worse than cleanly knowing one. Single-family sessions keep the comparisons inside the family, where they teach, instead of across families, where they smear.
Order the families by frequency, not by curiosity. Opening ranges come first because you are first into the pot constantly. Big blind defense comes second because you are in the big blind every orbit and facing a raise most of the time you are there. Facing 3-bets after you open comes third. Squeezes, cold 4-bets, and exotic multiway spots come last, not because they do not matter but because they arrive rarely, and study time invested in a rare spot pays a lower rate than the same time in a common one.
Study on live charts, not screenshots
The material you drill from shapes how well the drilling works, and static images have a structural problem: they cannot answer the question "compared to what?" A screenshot of a button opening range is one frozen fact. The lesson is in the deltas: what the cutoff gives up that the button keeps, what a 100bb range loses when the stack drops to 40bb, which hands switch from calling to raising when the open comes from a different seat. Frequencies are the other half of the argument. Solved ranges mix: boundary hands take an action some percentage of the time, and that percentage tells you how close to the edge the hand is. A static simplified sheet collapses each cell to a single verdict, which quietly deletes the most instructive information in the range. Test before you look
The single highest-leverage change most students can make is reversing the order of study and checking. Do not open the chart and read it. Close the chart, reconstruct the range from memory, then open it and score yourself. Recall practice is what builds recall; recognition practice mostly builds the feeling of knowing.
Reconstruction can be as simple as a blank 13 by 13 grid on paper, or just talking through the range out loud: pairs down to here, suited aces through here, these offsuit broadways, this band of suited connectors. When you check, score boundary misses, not cell counts. Getting a premium wrong never happens; the range lives at its edges, and whether you had the weakest suited gapper in or out is the exact information the drill exists to sharpen.
A second form of testing is dealing yourself decisions. Take a family you have studied, generate random hands, and answer at table speed: raise, call, or fold, and at what frequency if it is close. This is the same knowledge under time pressure, which is the condition you are actually training for. If saying the answer aloud before checking feels awkward, that is a sign the knowledge was recognition rather than recall, and exactly the gap the drill exists to close.
Schedule reviews on an expanding clock
A range studied once is a range on loan. Without review, recall decays in days, and the decay is steepest immediately after learning. The counter is spaced repetition applied at the level of spot families: revisit a family one day after first studying it, then around three days later, then a week, then longer, stretching the interval each time the reconstruction test comes back clean.
Reviews are short. The first pass on a family might take a full session; a review is five minutes of reconstruction plus a check. That asymmetry is what makes the schedule sustainable: a rotation of many learned families costs less per week than learning one new one. When a review comes back rough, do not just reread the chart and move on. Shrink the interval, treat the family as partially new, and find which boundary decayed, because it is usually a specific edge rather than the whole shape.
The practical implementation does not need software. A note listing each family with its next review date is enough, and the act of writing the date makes the review real in a way that intending to get back to it never does.
Playing sessions feed the schedule too. Every time you catch yourself unsure in a spot you have supposedly studied, that is a review trigger: note the spot, and put its family at the front of the queue.
